On March the 28th, 1950, at 4:17:03 GMT, three ships landed in the area of Lower Provence, by the Cheval Blanc peak, along the Bleone river, at 2,322.95 meters above sea level (consider the absurd accuracy of such data, an accuracy always present in their letters). It must be noted that in the vicinity of Cheval Blanc only one place exists that satisfies the many descriptions of this event. Whoever wrote them, had to be perfectly aware of the orographic structure of the peak. The map I present in the Appendix shows this area. It is not clear at all why this peculiar place was selected for their landing.
Six persons were composing this expedition, four men and two women, mostly very young. They were:
OEDEE 95, son of OEDEE 91, the chief of the group: he was an expert on BAAYIODUII (biology), and was 31 years old;
UURIO 79, son of IYIA 55, expert on BIIEUIGUU (human psycho-biology), 18 years old;
INNDO 33, daughter of INNDO 29, expert in DOLGAA GOO (physics of the structure of matter), she too was 18;
ODDIOA 1, son of ADAA 65, expert on AYUU WADDOSIA (communications), 78 years old;
ADAA 66, son of ADAA 65, a technician on AYUYISAA (sociology), 22 years old; he has been the only one to die, because of an accident, on November the 6th, 1967, in Yugoslavia. His body could not be recovered;
UORII 19, daughter of OBAA 7, expert in the Pathology of the digestive system, 32 years old.
It may be noted that Ummites are identified by a name composed of an alphabetical portion and a number, followed by a patronymic, whose meaning is not clear. More over in some cases the names of fathers and sons differ. On this subject, they have stated:
… we get a qualification that results into some coefficients, or indexes, which constitute our UMMOGAIAO DA (identifier). You may interpret that as a kind of a digital analytical imprint which reflects our physiologic-mental personality …
What could have been the mood of this little group scouting our planet? At first, they dug an underground refuge (the “Galería”), and started looking around, remaining concealed inside it. In the distance they were able to see the town of Digne, with its old cathedral, conspicuous among the small houses, whose function was not clear to the Ummites; 8 km away lay the village of La Javie, plus small farmhouses here and there. Obviously the place in which the Ummites concealed themselves was totally secluded.
On the evening of the 29th they decided to start exploring the vicinity; two of them went out on foot, strongly armed, wearing protective suits. Between two high trees the two found some burnt rocks, which a quick chemical analysis identified as limestone. Some meters away they discovered something extremely interesting:
Some 1.8 ENMOO (one ENMOO equals 1.9 m) they saw fragments of yellow-white plates; they were irregular and flexible, crumpled, and filled with signs, or characters, evidently written by humans; Three among them were soiled with faecal remains. Many unknown flying animals flew away. This discovery was judged so important that they went immediately back to the Galería …
The microscopic structure of those sheets of paper was analyzed, and found unknown, because on Ummo they do not use cellulose to manufacture paper. Characters were found to be not hand-written, but impressed by means of some kind of standard punches. Evidently a liquid ink had been used. But what was puzzling our friends was another question:
The presence of faecal remains was an enigma. Analyzing the excrements, epithelial cells were found, surely coming from human intestinal glands. A list of possible hypotheses was drawn up. The explanation that looked most probable involved some ritual: perhaps, at times, humans, when they did not agree with what was written on a sheet of paper, were accustomed to soil it with faecal remains …
It looks that this “find” is still today kept on Ummo as a kind of relic, in thermostatic conditions. Later on, our scouts found out that they were the first pages of “Le Figaro” of 26-27 of March.
The following day, they saw eight vertebrate animals, some 350 meters away. These had sharp appendages above their heads. Two men were sent out to investigate, wearing a peculiar kind of dark protective suit, that made them look like friars. Heavily armed, and very cautious, the two men emerged from the Galería. On Ummo there are no cows, and therefore those animals were unknown to them. They were able to identify their sex, thanks to their udders. At 15 meters from the beasts, the Ummites stopped, to record sounds and images, and to activate
… the process of detecting electro-static and gravitational fields generated by those animals, that, although having noted the presence of our brothers, went on without any reaction.
All of a sudden, a young shepherd appeared from within the near-by rocks; his apparel was different from that which was recorded over Montreux. The two Ummites weren’t able at first to ascertain his sex. They were very worried, remained motionless, and asked their chief “via wireless” what to do.
The boy, looking at them without too much surprise, had in his hands an yellow-whitish substance, coveted with something black, and he was quietly eating it in front of our brothers.
The boy uttered some sentences that could not be understood, then approached, lifting one hand to cover his eyes from the sun. The Ummites took this as a kind of greeting, and did the same, puzzling the boy. After a few seconds, when nothing happened, the shepherd turned, gathered his cows, and went away. During the encounter, the two Ummites had stayed still, trying to answer the supposed greeting, according to what their chief had told them to do. They returned to the Galería, very troubled. Their surprise had been so sudden that they had made no recording of the boy, and therefore now there was nothing to study. They had no idea on how things could turn out, so they strengthened their shelter, waiting for whatever, perhaps even an assault by the human military, if it had been notified by the boy.
The third day passed, without any human assault. Thanks to their optical instruments, the Ummites again sighted the boy, still engaged with his cows, and a couple of men further away. This time they recorded everything, so that our friends were able to manufacture suits similar to the ones the men had been wearing. Buttons, whose function had not been understood, were made with an aluminium alloy, neckties with a kind of flexible stuff (they had not been able to understand the topology of the tie), and an handkerchief peeking out of the breast-pocket was imitated using some alimentary substance. Of course, the “suits” were identical to one another.
The 2nd of April, as the situation was still quiet, three Ummites put the suits on, and emerged, again heavily armed, looking for the cowherd. With them they were carrying a brotherhood message, which had been prepared on Ummo in a binary language easy to be understood (!), and a sheet of the newspaper they had found days before.
The boy greeted them, lifting one hand. The Ummites, not knowing how to behave, remained still. The French boy approached, and said something. Then, he unwrapped some of his food, which he presented the Ummites. One of the three, well aware of the risk he was taking (remembering that they had not been able to ascertain the orientation of proteins), decided to accept, warning his companions to abstain. He ate, and survived. So the hypothesis that all over the universe proteins are oriented in the same way was verified. In the meantime they were perplexed because the boy wasn’t reacting to a language never heard before. The Ummites had understood that on Earth many different languages are spoken, but they believed that humans were able to understand them all. Later on they found that the boy’s name was Pierre, he was 11, and that a couple of years before he had encountered two German topographers, and was therefore a little accustomed to non French-speaking people. It has not been possible to identify him, from the Ummites’ descriptions.
As there were no unfriendly reactions, the Ummites started at once to learn from the boy. Gesturing, they had him spell the names of near-by objects, and to read (albeit with some difficulty) passages from the newspaper. From the Galería their friends were following the event, anxiously. By nightfall, the Ummites had learned 110 French terms; but the binary brotherhood message had not been understood by the boy!
After having gained a certain control over the environment, the Ummites got bolder, daring a night excursion into the village. Then, with a true “coup de main”, they invaded a near-by farmhouse, after having put its inhabitants into an hypnotic trance, stealing many different objects in order to study them, and collecting biological specimens from the people inside. When they recall this episode, the Ummites seem to ask forgiveness. They say that later they found a way to compensate the people for the stolen items.
The head of the local Gendarmerie recalls that one morning old Violat had come to report the theft of the most varied and often undesirable objects, but still adding up to the value of 70,000 francs, a huge sum in those times. Some years later, Violat having passed away, his sons won a lot of money in the lottery, moved to the Côte d’Azur, and were never heard of again …
Soon, the Ummites had realized that they could easily acquire a mock identity, pretending to be Dutch or Swedish physicians or biologists, looking to start a scientific and commercial enterprise in that area. In this way, the first Ummite beach-head on Earth was established.
